African Judicial Network | Webinar Series on Artificial Intelligence for Judges
About the webinars:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming legal systems, governance institutions, and public administration across the globe. Courts and judicial actors are increasingly encountering AI-driven technologies in areas such as legal research, case management, evidence analysis, online dispute resolution, translation services, and predictive analytics. While these developments present opportunities to improve efficiency and access to justice, they also raise profound questions concerning judicial independence, accountability, fairness, transparency, data governance, and public trust.
Across Africa, judiciaries are navigating growing public expectations for efficient, transparent, and accessible justice systems while simultaneously confronting challenges related to digital transformation, uneven technological infrastructure, cyber risks, and institutional capacity. The emergence of AI therefore presents both an opportunity and a responsibility: an opportunity to modernize judicial administration and improve service delivery, and a responsibility to ensure that technological adoption strengthens rather than undermines constitutional values, human rights, and confidence in the judiciary.
The CEELI Institute proposes a webinar series designed specifically for judges and magistrates across Africa. The series will create a platform for peer learning, comparative exchange, and practical reflection on how African judiciaries can responsibly engage with AI while safeguarding judicial integrity, transparency, and public trust and enhance awareness, understanding and judicial preparedness regarding the implications of AI for courts and justice systems in Africa
The webinar series will provide judges and judicial stakeholders with opportunities to:
Understand emerging AI technologies and their relevance to judicial systems;
Examine ethical, legal, and constitutional implications of AI use in courts;
Explore the relationship between AI, transparency, judicial legitimacy, and public confidence;
Share comparative experiences and good practices from African and international jurisdictions;
Discuss governance frameworks, safeguards, and accountability mechanisms for responsible AI adoption in the judiciary.
