Determining When to or Not to Engage with Law Enforcement: A Course for Investigative Journalists

The course will provide information about legal protection of journalists in their interaction with law enforcement, detail how law-enforcement can use materials published by investigative journalists, and they can protect sources and witnesses. The course will also touch upon the subject of digital evidence in war crimes prosecution.

 

Objectives

  • Understanding and consciously using accurate law enforcement language in reporting on law enforcement operations.
  • Evaluating law enforcement inaction on allegations of corruption and money laundering.
  • Recognizing the challenges law enforcement faces when using leaked data or privileged information.
  • Understanding the legal protections provided to journalists and their sources.
  • Assessing interactions with law enforcement and international institutions that investigate and prosecute war crimes before approaching these institutions.
  • Identifying international mechanisms for utilizing law enforcement reporting to facilitate change in law enforcement anti-corruption and anti-money laundering mechanisms.

This training is open to investigative journalists from Central and Eastern Europe, including Baltic and Balkan states.
