Keeping with a trend of “firsts” in 2019, the CEELI Institute was honored to participate at the International Organization of Judicial Training’s (IOJT) biannual conference in Cape Town, South Africa in September. Established in 2002, the IOJT is an international non-profit organization that consists of 123 member-institutes from 75 countries established to promote the rule of law by supporting the work of judicial education institutions around the world. The 2019 conference, “Judicial Training: A Key to Successful Transformation of the Judiciary,” was attended by nearly 300 guests from around the world. A day-one panel, “Adjudicating Terrorism-Related Cases: A Curriculum Development Model,” highlighted CEELI’s multi-year project working with the National Judicial Academy of India (NJA) and the US Federal Judicial Center (FJC) on curricula development for judges handling terrorism cases. The panel was comprised of CEELI Program Manager Cristobal Diaz, FJC Director of International Judicial Relations Mira Gur-Arie, Hon. Joymalya Bagchi of the Calcutta High Court, and IOJT President Hon. Eliezer Rivlin. The unique project model, which coupled training on modern pedagogy for judges with the creation of a national counterterrorism curriculum, drew wide praise from representatives from judicial training institutions from around the world, many of which struggle to incorporate modern teaching techniques into their systems.
